Vauxhall announces that it will launch a new Astra-based two-door coupe, called GT in 2017

Vauxhall has just launched the new five star rejuvenated small Astra and a brand spanking new Insignia is on its way. Rumours are that a replacement for the ageing Antara, a mid-size SUV is also on the cards.

However, the most exciting news is that the UK based brand is planning a new two-door, 2+2 coupé called the GT, which will rival Audi’s TT and the VW Scirocco. A source familiar with the issue said that the new car is under consideration and a concept will be unveiled at next year’s Geneva Motor Show. The feasibility of the new car will be assessed following press and public reaction to the show car.

The new Vauxhall GT takes its inspiration from a previous Opel concept, its sister company and first seen at the 1965 Frankfurt Motor Show. At the time, the Opel GT Experimental was dubbed the ‘baby Corvette’ and became the first European concept to go into series production.

The new GT will be based on Vauxhall’s new lightweight Astra hatch with a front-wheel-drive set-up, alongside a range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. It’s likely to feature the Astra’s new 1.6-litre Whisper diesel, as well as an upgraded version of the 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol. It will have a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, with an optional, economy-friendly Easytronic auto.

The exterior has all GM’s interior expertise, with a dashboard lifted straight from the Astra. The latest connectivity and infotainment options should also be offered. If and when given the green light, the GT will mark the final piece in Vauxhall’s upgraded model range. Prices are likely to be competitive, starting from around £22,000, hurting premium makers like VW and Audi.
