Future of Cars

Auto industry giants are already using the computer chips from Nvidia and they have proved themselves brilliantly

Nvidia has earned quite some reputation in the field of powerful graphics processors which are used in video game consoles and for the laptops. This American based company has recently made a statement regarding supercomputers driving future cars. According to them, each of the automated future cars will possess powerful supercomputer but their size will be not more than a car stereo.

After years of expertise in the gaming zone, the company finally decided to step in into automotive industry and about ten years ago it started making chips for cars. In 2009, when the third generation Audi A8 was launched, the world witnessed the first car to use an Nvidia graphic processor. It was used to power the 3D navigation system display of Audi A8.

Here’s a look at few of the world-class cars using Nvidia processors:-

Mercedes F015

Mercedes has always been one step ahead of its competitors in terms of luxury and style. This time, they have come up with the idea of “digital living space” where the passengers will be able to connect to high-resolution touchscreens and interact with the car by gestures.

To best fit the needs of such gigantic living space, Nvidia had to think of something exceptional, so they came up with the Tegra X1 processor. With its capacity to deliver one trillion floating-point operations per second, also known as FLOPS, this processor holds the same power as a supercomputer of 1,600 square foot, almost 15 years ago.

Honda Civic with Android

All these computer aided cars are ok but the real ambition of Nvidia is to somehow grab the big share of autonomous car market in the world. In order to make this happen, Drive PX autopilot computer system for Honda cars has recently been launched by the company. In this system, the data from 12 different cameras, positioned all around the car and an extensive learning system make it possible to determine what is going on around the car.

With the help of cloud technology integration, this car will learn new things just like a baby and become even smarter by each passing day.

Another proud partner is the German auto maker Audi, whose zFAS self-driving car technology has been worked on by Nvidia. This car drove itself from San Francisco to Las Vegas, covering 550 miles without any setback. This demonstration was made at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2015.
