At Geneva Show we’ll be seeing some spectacular lightweight sports cars featuring 3D-printed Skeletal Structure

Light Cocoon, a lightweight sports car concept has been built by EDAG Engineering using 3D printing technology to produce a fabric membrane which is wrapped around a skeletal structure.

This company is involved in aerospace engineering, thus they strived for something that could change the whole concept of car designs.

This concept is the inspiration for plant’s leaf, that’s the only reason it has been called “bionically optimised vehicle”. Jack Wolfskin is the outdoor specialist who designed the outer skin which is weather proof so it may last long enough. If you remember the BMW GINA prototype which was revealed back in 2008, this idea is almost similar to that.

Texapore Softshell is the fabric used for this prototype, the purpose of this material is to let the light in from outside and keep the weight of the vehicle to minimal as this is an extremely lightweight material. The intricate skeletal components of the chassis which has been printed using a 3D printer display yellow backlighting underneath.

We hope to see Light Cocoon over a concept chassis this March at Geneva Motor Show.
