Pollution in London

There are 9 out of 10 diesel cars are not roadworthy according to EU Pollution limits they exceed the pollution limits

Road test reveals that the cars in Europe emit almost seven times the permitted level of emissions. These are tested in the real world conditions. Nine out of ten cars during that test were unable to even get closer to the permissible limits. More than 90 percent cars break new EU pollution limits when tested. These tests were conducted on the real public roads rather than tracks.

On average, the cars emit six to seven times the permitted level of NOx gasses. Where there was a car that has broken all the records of being dirty by emitting 22 times the legal limits. In real world conditions, almost all the major car brands have breached the limits allowed in the EU.

Since September 1, new Euro 6 standards for the emissions are in action and all the EU vehicles have to comply with emissions rules under the new standards.

Some experts argue that the automakers can use the range of techniques in the controlled testing environment for better performance figures. But when driven by ordinary drivers, the performance figures will not be the same.

The techniques used in a controlled environment are, no air pressure, components removed to reduce weight, super smooth test tracks and over inflating tyres etc. etc.

The same techniques were tried to get the similar economy figures, but on public roads, the results were totally different. According to the transport and environment (T&E) data, the diesel engines emits much greater than the normal when tested on public roads.

The T&E report also found that the cars and engines manufacturers often offer low emission models of the same cars in US markets where the government has even strict emission rules. So it should a rule for automakers to sell low emission models in the EU as in the US.
