The Swedish car maker Volvo is about to produce V40 on its new scalable platform, the smallest car ever built under Volvo badge

The new architecture named CMA is still under development phase and according to safety chief at Volvo, building smaller car might force company to let go some of the safety standards followed.

It is also believed that the next generation XC40 SUV and V40 will underpin the new platform. Yes! They are likely to carry a new badge, Geely.

Volvo-Geely near Gothenburg is the facility where this new platform has been developed. According to some insiders, the all new Volvo XC40 will not make it to the market before 2018.

Volvo bosses are not willing to roll out another car based on an obsolete platform so for the time being they are more focused towards the compact SUV market. This segment led by the Nissan Qashqai is growing at a rapid pace so capitalising the market is the first priority.

The XC40 will also let you choose between two and four-wheel drive options, the engine line-up is said to be open for V40. The real game changer is Volvo’s triple-turbo Drive-E 2.0-litre 450 bhp Volvo engine concept which hopefully is going to beat Mercedes A45 AMG.

To keep the things into groove, Volvo is working on its naming strategy so now the ‘S’ prefix will define the saloons. The ‘XC’ will be used for the SUV’s as in XC60 and XC90 whereas the ‘V’ will be used for estate models.

The V70 Cross Country is going to be the name of the next-generation Volvo XC70, a rugged version rather than a fully formed SUV. To make the things even simpler for the buyers, Volvo is planning to replace the names of V70 and S80 to V90 and S90. This way the small Volvo’s will carry ‘40’, mid-sized ‘60’ and the larger Volvo’s will be denoted by ‘90’.
