BMW has developed a drivetrain to combine four-turbo petrol engine with E-Drive technologies

After the great success of i3 and i8 electric cars, BMW has developed a highly efficient drivetrain with a focus on zero-carbon emissions. However, BMW already has an active Hybrid series of electric cars but Munich is planning to launch more efficient models with most modern technologies. It is also reported that BMW has signed a partnership for batteries and other electric parts

There are rumours about BMW signing a partnership with Tesla Motors for batteries and parts, but the point of interest is that the German automaker is looking for Hybrid drivetrain under the name of Power E-Drive.

This is where BMW has planned to upgrade the 5-Series GT with a new drivetrain; a 2.0 Litre four cylinder engine which is only available in Europe specifications. This unit will be paired with a pair of electric motors. The new BMW engine will deliver power equal to 228 horses and electric motors will develop 268 horsepower and 201 horsepower respectively. Total of all these units makes 680 horsepower. The torque stands at 750 Lb-Ft.

Economy figures are also reported at 62 miles, when using an all-electric mode in a 5-Series GT Power eDrive. When driver switches on the power eDrive, engine starts acting as a generator while boosting the whole system performance at the same time. If you want to use the system as a conventional Hybrid, it will return you more than 370 miles from a tank of petrol.

In other words, you can understand the performance levels of Power eDrive with the example of 550i. The prototype Power eDrive can deliver more than the 4.4 Litre V8 550i GT, which clocks 4.5 seconds to reach 60 mph from standstill position.
